While a typical wash cycle flushes most food particles and debris down your dishwasher’s drain, some can be left behind. These particles amass in the filter or on the tub walls or spray arms. As they decay, they generate a smelly bacteria that multiply rapidly.
Perform regular cleanings with these following tips and methods can help prevent your dishwasher from smelling:
Filter Cleaning
- Remove the bottom rack of your dishwasher.
- Turn the circular filter counterclockwise.
- Take out the filter by lifting it upwards, remove the stainless steel mesh filter as well.
- Rinse the filters with warm running water, scrub gently with a brush or abrasive cloth as needed.
- Return the stainless steel filter, followed by the circular filter, and twist it clockwise to lock in place.
Tub Cleaning
- Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into a dishwasher-safe bowl.
- Place the bowl in the top rack of your empty dishwasher.
- Run it with the Machine or Normal Clean wash cycle.
Spray Arms Cleaning
- Remove the lower spray arm of your dishwasher by lifting it upward. Unscrew the upper spray arm by turning it counterclockwise and pulling down.
- Dislodge any visible particles trapped in the spray armholes by using a pin or any sharp metal tool.
- Run the spray arms under running water.
- Replace the bottom spray arm by pushing it down and twist the upper spray arm clockwise until it locks into place.
Dishwasher Odor Prevention Tips
- Clean the tub regularly.
- Only use a dishwasher detergent in your dishwasher dispenser and follow the recommended amount to put in.
- If you don’t run the dishwasher daily, run a rinse cycle to remove accumulated food particles.
